How to judge the wear of brake discs and at what thickness they should be replaced

2026-04-01

The brake disc is a key component in a vehicle’s braking system that withstands high temperatures and friction, and its condition directly impacts driving safety. Many car owners only pay attention to replacing brake pads while ignoring wear on the brake discs. In fact, an excessively worn brake disc not only lengthens the braking distance but may also cause serious accidents such as fracture. Learning to scientifically judge the wear level of brake discs and mastering replacement standards is an essential car maintenance skill for every driver.

Intuitive Signs: Warning Signals of Abnormal Noise and Vibration

Abnormal vehicle feedback during daily driving is often the first indicator of brake disc wear. If a sharp metallic grinding sound is heard when lightly or firmly pressing the brake pedal (excluding the sound from the brake pad wear indicator), it usually means the brake pads have worn out completely, and the metal backing plate is grinding directly against the brake disc, meaning the disc surface is inevitably damaged. In addition, obvious high-frequency vibration of the steering wheel or vehicle body when braking at high speeds is highly likely caused by deformation (warping) of the brake disc surface due to prolonged high temperatures or uneven stress. This vibration not only compromises driving comfort but also indicates uneven thickness or loss of flatness of the brake disc, requiring immediate inspection.

Tactile Inspection: Identifying Grooves and Edge Lips

When the vehicle is cool, a preliminary assessment can be made by touching the brake disc surface through the wheel hub gaps. A normal brake disc should have a smooth and flat surface. Visible deep grooves or scratches suggest insufficient surface hardness or embedded hard debris; repair or replacement is recommended if the depth exceeds 1.5 mm. A more critical indicator is the "edge lip". Since brake pads only contact the middle section of the disc, prolonged wear forms a raised "lip" on the outer edge of the disc. A prominent lip that catches a fingernail when scraped across indicates a significant reduction in the disc’s effective thickness. Generally, replacement is necessary when the edge lip exceeds 2 mm.

Dimensional Measurement: Mandatory Standard for Minimum Thickness

The most scientific method is to measure the actual thickness of the brake disc with a micrometer. The marking "MIN TH" (minimum thickness) is usually engraved on the side or center hub of each brake disc, representing the manufacturer-set safety limit. When the measured thickness falls below this value, the brake disc’s heat dissipation capacity and structural strength cannot be guaranteed, making mandatory replacement essential. For discs without engraved markings, the general rule is: replacement is required when disc wear exceeds 20%–25% of the new disc thickness, or the remaining thickness is less than 20 mm (specific to vehicle models—new discs for sedans are typically 22–24 mm thick with a limit of around 20 mm; SUV discs are slightly thicker). Continuing to use such discs out of luck is highly risky, as they are prone to cracking under high temperatures.

Visual Inspection: Thermal Damage from Cracks and Discoloration

Beyond thickness, check for physical damage to the disc surface. Radial fine cracks, especially those extending from the center to the edge, indicate metal fatigue caused by extreme high temperatures, posing a fracture risk and requiring immediate replacement. Additionally, large blue-purple scorch marks on the disc surface signify changes in the material’s metallographic structure, reduced hardness and toughness, and severely compromised braking performance. Even with sufficient thickness, such discs should be replaced promptly to prevent sudden failure.

In summary, judging brake disc wear requires a combination of four methods: listening for noise, touching the surface, measuring dimensions, and inspecting appearance. Immediate replacement is imperative if severe vibration, excessive edge lips, sub-limit thickness, or cracks and scorching are detected. Regular maintenance and inspections are vital to prevent a "faulty" brake disc from becoming a ticking time bomb on the road.
